What is Content Writing and Why You Should make a Schedule for it?

Content writing is pretty simple, you can gauge all you need to from just the two words alone.

Let’s break it down anyway.

“Content”

Content can be a variety of things when it comes down to the internet (or any medium you choose really). Think of the world beyond you—it is all an empty space, just waiting to be filled. With what? Well, with content. You choose the type of content you wish to put out there. It can take just about any form you want it to. The content you choose is what you need the most in that moment, it can be a blog, infographic, video, newsletter, or social media.

Let’s break it down a little further, we’ll go with the easiest example, that being this blog.

This blog is the type of content that I am putting out into the empty space, for an audience that either exists or is waiting to come alive. Does this mean that this blog is the only type of content that can exist in this space for that audience? No. Absolutely not. This content exists to facilitate other content. When this blog comes out it will be placed in tandem with a social media piece—which will exist on different mediums itself. Along with the social media, there may be more companion pieces that are released alongside it, like a newsletter, which the blog may bring attention to or the newsletter will have brought the reader to the blog.

The content created is used to fill the void and feed the audience, but each piece will require a different format, this format will take place in the writing phase. Where the writer in question will have to make that individual piece shine.

“Writing”

The dilemma of the whole “content writing” phrase. Here is the make or break, since ideating content is a breeze, the writing is the “doing” part. You (or your writer) will have to sit down and actually create the content in question. There are numerous ways to break down this aspect.

Your writer can look to your brand, your voice, and your previously established content in order to create the content that your audience is asking for or that you wish to relay to your audience. The writing is where you content takes a deep breath and begins to scream (or whisper) into the void what you wish to share.

Good content writing will implement your brand voice and use it to fully explain your service, product, or idea in a concise manner that feels like you (your brand or company) are the one’s saying it. This writing will be placed into each piece of content and no matter where your reader is, they will be ensnared (if your branding, messaging, and writing are working in tandem).

“Content Writing”

Putting them together, you’ll have yourself a content writer, who is writing you content—I know this is a world-shattering conclusion. A great content writer can bring the most out of your brand and voice, they can assist you in creating a funnel that can turn readers and onlookers alike into a consumer or fan.

However, content—just as in all things that are released into the world, requires one thing and one thing alone… Consistency.

Make a Schedule

Why do you return to a show/anime/cartoon?

Why do you keep watching a YouTuber?

Why do you read manga/comic/news?

Aside from the obvious fact (for some—my biases may be shining) that the content you return to is good or enjoyable, you know that it is there.

That show is going to air next week, so you’ll tune in. That comic is going to update the second week of the month, so you’ll pick it up. Your favorite YouTuber comes out with a new video every Thursday at 2pm sharp, so you’ve got something to watch now.

Even in the world of streaming, where you can pick up on something new whenever you want, you’ll create a schedule or time to sit down and be able to enjoy it.

We humans are creatures of habit. We take comfort in the little things—this is what brings us joy or distracts us from the monotony of it all.

If you wish to have audience, you’ll need a schedule. This schedule will be your playbook to success. You’ll learn when to post, where you should post it, and you’ll shape it to the audience you amass.

The Take Away

Since this blog is both a guide for newcomers and myself… I will declare my schedule, every Thursday at 2pm sharp, there will be a new blog post. Alongside the blog post, you will see some social media posts on it, namely Twitter and LinkedIn.

A newsletter is to come, but I will find a way to fit that into my content schedule.
